UConn Opens New Downtown Campus in Hartford

By Events, KR Projects, Team Members

The University of Connecticut opened its new campus with a ribbon cutting ceremony in downtown Hartford. The new building represents the fulfillment of two goals: 1) creating a centrally located campus for the UConn Hartford students and faculty and 2) revitalizing the Front Street District by incorporating the previously vacant Hartford Times Building into the architectural fabric of the city.

“It will be part of the backbone of Hartford: a place of learning, engagement, and discovery, and a vibrant part of this neighborhood and the capital city as a whole,” said UConn President Susan Herbst.

The new building totals over 230,000 sf and accommodates classrooms, common spaces, academic department offices, science laboratories, student café/casual dining areas, and retail spaces.

Partners Rory Ronan, Joseph Lembo, Craig Razza, and Steve Lembo, along with senior project engineers, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the new campus.

The Frick Collection

The Frick Collection

By KR Projects

May is Historic Preservation Month. It is a fitting time to announce one of Kohler Ronan’s latest projects: the expansion and enhancement of The Frick Collection’s facilities. Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Frick engaged Carrère and Hastings to build his family a home in New York City, completed in 1914.  In 1935, John Russell Pope converted the late Gilded Age mansion from the Frick’s private residence to a public museum consisting of exceptional galleries, new public spaces, and gardens. A separate building on 71st Street was erected in the same year to accommodate the growth of the Frick Art Reference Library. Today, the institution is one of the world’s premier museums and research institutions. Significant increases to the number of visitors, and the pressing need to enhance collection care, conservation facilities, and public programming initiatives, necessitate that the facilities’ expansion and enhancements currently in design.

Kohler Ronan is consulting engineer for the project providing MEP/FP design as well as energy analysis. Earlier selections included Selldorf Architects as leading designer, and Beyer Blinder Belle as executive architect. We look forward to collaborating with our colleagues at Selldorf and Beyer Blinder Belle, as well as The Frick Collection, to realize the goals of this New York City landmark and national treasure.
