Recreation Management, May/June 2006
It had become an annual ritual at the Milford/Orange YMCA in Milford, Conn. Each year as the weather grew colder, a group of volunteers would inflate a bubble over the pool so it could stay open during the winter. The dome, however, seemed archaic, and the air-handling system had grown outdated. YMCA officials knew there had to be a better way and began searching for one. In the end, they found a solution that provided year-round recreation without losing the sense of being outdoors.

The original Museum of Modern Art Sculpture Garden dates back to the early 1900’s, at which time the land was owned and occupied by the Rockefeller Estate. The Garden, in the rear of their brownstone townhouse, provided the Rockefellers with an “outdoor room”, in which to display their collection of sculpture.
