Description
The University of Virginia sought to expand the distinguished McIntire School of Commerce in 2019. Offering ample space, while still preserving the sense of continuity, community, and identity which is fundamental to the campus, Cobb Hall was selected as the approved expansion site. When opened in 1917, the building served as a facility for scientific research, housing laboratories and the like. More recently, the building’s function and purpose changed. The historic building has, however, remained important to the character of the university. As such, the northern portion of Cobb Hall is being preserved, while the rear portion (approx. 2/3 of the building) is being taken away to allow for the addition of Shumway Hall.
Consisting of 105, 000 square feet across five floors, Shumway contains an atrium gathering space, utility spaces, classrooms, and break-out areas. The second floor accommodates innovation and technology labs, data labs, and more classrooms. A café, a common lounge, and a student center can be found on the third floor, while the fourth level houses offices, a lounge, a conference room, and a student center. The fifth floor is dedicated to mechanical equipment.
Kohler Ronan’s engineers are designing the necessary MEP/FP, IT, AV, security, and technology building systems in support of the architectural program for both the renovated spaces and the Shumway expansion. UVA has aggressive energy conservation goals and is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
