Mayor de Blasio Announces Winners of the 32nd Annual Awards for Excellence in Design

Alley Pond Environmental Center (Queens, NY)

A project of the Department of Parks & Recreation
Situated at the edge of Alley Pond Park in Queens, NY, the newly redesigned Alley Pond Environmental Center will serve approximately 50,000 school children annually. With double the space of the current facility, the new center will allow staff to better instruct additional students and demonstrate sustainable building practices using the building itself as a teaching tool.

New York Botanical Garden’s East Gate Entrance, Edible Academy, and Family Garden (Bronx, NY)

A project of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Department of Parks & Recreation and the New York Botanical Garden
The redesign of the east entrance to the New York Botanical Garden serves to reconnect the community to the beautiful collections within the garden. Crossing a hardwood pedestrian bridge will lead the visitor to the state-of-the-art Edible Academy and Family Garden. Highlighted in the design of this project are numerous sustainable features, including a greenroof system, geothermal heating and cooling, and solar panels.

Milford/Orange YMCA Earns Architecture & Design Award

It had become an annual ritual at the Milford/Orange YMCA in Milford, Conn. Each year as the weather grew colder, a group of volunteers would inflate a bubble over the pool so it could stay open during the winter. The dome, however, seemed archaic, and the air-handling system had grown outdated. YMCA officials knew there had to be a better way and began searching for one. In the end, they found a solution that provided year-round recreation without losing the sense of being outdoors.

The Museum of Modern Art Honored with ASLA Award

The original Museum of Modern Art Sculpture Garden dates back to the early 1900’s, at which time the land was owned and occupied by the Rockefeller Estate. The Garden, in the rear of their brownstone townhouse, provided the Rockefellers with an “outdoor room”, in which to display their collection of sculpture.
