Description
Founded in 1916, the Memphis Art Museum (formerly the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art) is the largest art museum in the state of Tennessee. To showcase its vast permanent and temporary collection, and to become more accessible to the public, a new facility has been commissioned. The new building will be situated along the Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, as a central component to the revitalization and reactivation of the Memphis riverfront. It will become a premier destination along the riverfront connecting to parks, walking paths, public amenities, and civic spaces.
The project includes the design of a new 112,000 square feet. state-of-the-art museum and civic center. The museum will incorporate expanded galleries that will showcase the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The building also includes an outdoor courtyard sculpture garden, a rooftop pavilion, 175-seat box theater, dining facility, café, classrooms, expanded collections storage, and a museum store.
Kohler Ronan provided mechanical design services to support design Architect Herzog & de Meuron and Executive Architect Archimania. Our work incorporated discrete HVAC equipment and distribution elements, seamlessly interwoven into the architectural composition. Groundbreaking began in 2023 with expected construction completion in 2026.
